Grief Awareness Month (AU)

Loading Events

Grief Awareness Month recognises the impact of grief and loss on individuals, families and communities. Grief can follow death, illness, relationship breakdown, miscarriage or major life change, and it affects people in different ways and at different times.

The day encourages open conversations about grief, compassion for those experiencing loss and greater awareness of support services available across Australia.

Why it matters

  • Grief is a natural response to loss, but it affects people differently and does not follow a set timeline.
  • Many people experience grief in silence due to social discomfort, stigma or lack of understanding from others.
  • Unrecognised or unsupported grief can affect mental health, physical well-being, relationships and the ability to function day to day.
  • Grief may follow death, illness, relationship breakdown, miscarriage or other significant life changes.
  • Awareness helps normalise grief and encourages compassionate responses from families, workplaces, schools and communities.
  • Access to appropriate support can reduce isolation and help people navigate loss in healthier ways.

Grief Awareness Month recognises the impact of grief and loss and encourages open conversation, understanding and access to support for those who are grieving.
