Group of older Australians advocating for kindness to the elderly

Healthy Aging Is About More Than Health

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed on 15th June each year, is an important reminder that older Australians deserve to be treated with dignity, respect and care.

When people think about elder abuse, they often think of physical harm or financial exploitation. While these are serious concerns, elder abuse can also occur when an older person’s wishes, personal information or important decisions are not properly respected or understood.

As Australians live longer, many families find themselves navigating increasingly complex situations involving health care, finances, legal documents and day-to-day household management. In many cases, critical information exists only in one person’s head. When illness, incapacity or cognitive decline occurs, loved ones are often left scrambling to find important documents, understand wishes or make decisions without clear guidance.

This can create stress, confusion, frustration and, in some circumstances, increase the risk of misunderstandings or disputes.

Having important information documented and organised does not prevent elder abuse on its own. However, good planning can help support transparency, clarity and communication between family members and trusted support people.

Simple steps such as documenting key contacts, recording personal preferences, organising important documents and discussing wishes with trusted family members can make a significant difference when life takes an unexpected turn.

Planning is not just about preparing for death. It is about helping the people around us understand our wishes and support us when we may need help the most.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day reminds us that protecting older Australians is not only about responding to abuse when it occurs. It is also about creating systems, conversations and plans that promote dignity, independence and informed decision-making throughout life’s later years.

The best time to start those conversations is before they become urgent.
