Connect and Celebrate: Queensland Seniors Month
Getting older doesn’t mean becoming less involved in life. For many Australians, it’s a time to explore new interests, strengthen friendships, share knowledge and enjoy the things that matter most.
Queensland Seniors Month is an opportunity to celebrate all of that — and the people who make our families and communities what they are.
Running from 1–31 October 2026, this year’s theme, Connect and Celebrate, recognises the contributions older Queenslanders continue to make.
Staying Connected Matters
A chat over the fence. A weekly catch-up with friends. Joining a local group or simply having someone to share a laugh with.
These everyday connections matter.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 62.6% of Australians aged 65 and over reported seeing family or friends outside their household at least weekly during the survey’s reference period in 2025.
But not everyone has those opportunities. Moving house, losing a partner or living far from family can make staying connected more difficult.
Sometimes, an invitation for a cuppa is a wonderful place to start.
The Contributions We Sometimes Overlook
Older Australians contribute far more than many people realise.
In 2025, 25.9% of Australians aged 65 and over participated in unpaid voluntary work through an organisation, according to the ABS.
And that’s only formal volunteering.
Think about grandparents helping with school pickups, neighbours checking on one another, retired tradespeople sharing their skills or community members volunteering with local organisations.
Experience doesn’t suddenly lose its value when someone retires.

There’s Always Something New to Enjoy
Queensland Seniors Month isn’t just about recognising past achievements. It’s also about enjoying what’s ahead.
That might mean:
- Joining a community group or trying a new activity.
- Volunteering for a cause that matters to you.
- Reconnecting with an old friend.
- Sharing family stories with children or grandchildren.
- Finally making time for something you’ve always wanted to do.
- You don’t need a packed calendar. What matters is finding activities and connections that are meaningful to you.

Staying Involved in Your Own Decisions
As life changes, so can our priorities.
Some people want to travel more. Others want to spend time with family, simplify their household or get their personal affairs organised.
Whatever those priorities are, the important thing is having a say in them.
Even practical tasks such as organising important documents, recording preferences and discussing future wishes can help people remain actively involved in decisions affecting their lives.
That’s where everyday organisation and end-of-life planning can work together — preparing for life’s changes while continuing to enjoy the present.
Celebrate the People, Not Just the Month
Queensland Seniors Month is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate older Australians.
But appreciation shouldn’t end when October does.
Keep the conversations going. Make time for one another. Ask questions. Listen to the stories.
And remember that everyone, regardless of age, has something valuable to contribute.
